Anybody got any advice on duck pond construction and management?
Richard,
Your options are limited. The East Texas Waterfowl program administered through DU has been closed. Bet they did not mention that at the last banquet asking for money. I could go on about how we have been abandoned for the Playa lakes and Coastal Plain but that would not answer your question.
I think your best option would be to find someone who has done construction of something like that before. I, and several others around, have used Jim Wall for the dirt work. He is popular, busy and not the cheapest, but I found him worth the money and wait for my project. He has all the fancy GPS tools, and my project, which has very little fall across the land, works perfectly. His Cell is 820-0777. The water control structure was manufactured by Seabreeze Culvert down south. Also good guys. Came in under the estimate provided by DU on mine. They are on the web at:http://www.seabreeze-culvert.com/
One could accomplish a lot if you are in the woods near the river where there are a lot of little slews and all just with some dirt, pipe and boards, but if you are going to go big you need to do some work up front. I am off Hwy 30 if you want to see my project sometime. I think that the more duck habitat we have along the river the more will hang around here and the harder it will be for the cities to justify future encroachment on our habitats.
Thanks a lot Dan for visiting the Harvey blog and responding. Yes, I'd like to see your project. Can you give me a phone number?
I already contacted one contractor, but haven't decided yet what to do. Thanks for the seabreeze website. It looks like I'll just need a slide gate. I'll also check on Jim Wall because the land is in the flood plain of the Navasota and I do, indeed, plan on damming a slew. A GPS system used by the contractor will be a big help. A little height on the dam and the water will spread pretty far. We get flooding some winters as you know, but it's not reliable enough for ducks to come by often. I figured that about 15 acres of year-around water might keep them coming.
Yes, I don't recall DU mentioning that they closed the East Texas program!
Look forward to visiting with you.
Regards,
Dick
